Edward Cullen = superhero???

Postby 3_spunk_ransom on Tue Sep 15, 2009 8:02 am

Hey guys,

At school at the moment we are doing a research unit for NCEA this year in English. Of course I leapt at the oppurtunity to research anything to do with the Twilight Saga so I decided on researching the modern day superhero - Edward Cullen.
Anyway, we have to come up with research questions and two of my questions are...

1) Why is he thought of as 'heroic' and what makes him different from your average stereotypical superhero?

and

2) Has Edward changed the way people look at superheroes and if so how?

I would love to know your thoughts and it would be a big help to my research unit!

1) he's heroic because, when it comes down to it, he would rather save people than drink their blood. he saves the 'damsel in distress'. and what makes him different? well the fact that he's what could often be called an 'evil being' (vampire) and that what he does (being with bella/around humans) goes against his very nature.

2) no i dont think it has changed the way people look at superheros, but has kiinda given them a new 'category' to sort them into - the bay boy with the hero heart'

Just to put the cat amongst the pidgeons.... Would you really consider Edward a "superhero"? Most of them seem to have an agenda of "saving humanity" in some manner, using their superpowers to "do good". It seems to me that until he became involved with Bella, Edward was, while trying to live a "moral" existance, mainly avoiding being noticed. Although the whole family interacted with the human population, with the exception of Carlisle, they tried not to be too involved with them, and even Carlisle generally kept it very proffessional. Sorry, this is a rather convoluted response with lots of quotation marks and awful spelling but I am trying to say that whether you consider Edward a "superhero" depends on your definition of "superhero".
